The robots have numerous sensors (cameras, gyroscopes, sonars, etc.) and actuators (motors, kicking devices, etc) which allow them to play with complete autonomy, i.e., without human intervention. The robots also have wireless connection to as to communicate with each other and the referee.
Some elements have specific colors (the ball is orange, the field is green, the lines and goals are white) in order to allow an easier detection by the robots.
There are usually two referees, one that regulates the game, and another which interacts with a graphical interface. This interface communicates to the robots the faults, goals, cards, etc, which occur during the game.
Rules and technical Specifications
The MSL rules used in the National Robotics Festival are the same ones as used in RoboCup, which result from an adaptation from the ones from FIFA. You can read the 2010 rules here (document msl-rules-2009-18-12.pdf). The rules are updated every year aiming at getting closer to the FIFA original rules, so as to be able to compete with the world human champion in the future.
